Federal Highway Police of Brazil

Created by President Washington Luís on July 24th 1928, the “Traffic Police” was renamed in 1945 to the “Federal Highway Police”.

With the advent of the 1988 Constitution, the Federal Highway Police was institutionalized and integrated into the National Public Security System. Under the new legal condition, it consolidated its mission with public safety, in addition to federal highways. Currently, the Federal Highway Police is responsible for road safety, the prevention and qualified repression of crime on more than 75,000 kilometers of federal highways and roads in all Brazilian states and in areas of interest to the Union.

The prompt federal response to the most diverse public security demands in Brazil is its main characteristic. It is considered the best trained and professional Police force in the country in addition to being the highest paid.
